Vijayadashami marks the importance of good over evil. Vijayadashami goes by different names such as Dussehra, and Dasara in different parts of India. Vijaya means victory and Dashami means Tenth. Hence, Vijayadashami is celebrated on the tenth day of Navaratri as per Hindu Calendar.

Vijayadashami 2022 Date and Timings

For the year 2022, Dussehra will be celebrated from 26th September to 5th October. Vijayadashami is celebrated on October 5th, 2022 at 08.30 AM

History of Vijayadashami:

Dussehra is celebrated on the occasion of the triumph of the Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura stressing the importance of good over evil. Vijayadashami holds a significant role in Ramayana and Mahabaratha as it is on this day Kaurava army was defeated by Lord Krishna and Lord Rama defeated Ravana. 

In Mahabharata, Arjuna, one of the five Pandava kings, participates in ongoing battles between Pandavas and Kauravas. After seeking the blessings of the Goddess Durga, he defeats the entire army of 1,00,000 soldiers including Bhishma, Karna, Ashwathama, and Drona. 

In Ramayana, War was declared between Rama and Ravana as the latter refused to release the kidnapped Sita. Rame came to know a secret from Vibhishan who is Ravana’s brother that he needs a special power to be killed. Knowing this, Lord Rama performs a 9- day Durga Pooja and seeks blessings from the goddess to defeat Ravana. He killed Ravana on the tenth day and so these 9 days are celebrated as Navratri and the tenth day as Vijayadashami.

Importance of Vijayadashami:

Whether it is Goddess Durga destroying Mahishasura, Rama defeating Ravana, or Lord Krishna defeating the Kaurava army, the festival signifies the Dharma swaying over the Adharma. 

• Dussehra is celebrated for 10 days 
• The clay idols of Goddess Durga and other gods will be immersed in the water representing the fact that they will be returning to their place after spending 10 days on Earth.
• Ramaleela goes on all those 10 days depicting the skits and dramas from Ramayanam.
• Huge figurines of the demons Ravana, Mahisashura, and Kumbakarna are made and burnt as a part of the celebrations.
