There are two temples located here. The first one is called Omkareshwar, and its name literally translates to “Lord of Omkaara” or “Lord of the Om Sound.” The second temple is called Mamleshwar or Amareshwar, and its name literally translates to “Immortal lord” or “lord of the Immortals or Devas.” Both of these temples may be found on the banks of the Narmada River; the name of the temple, as well as the temple itself, are both symbolic of Lord Shiva.
The holy river Narmada is responsible for the formation of Omkareshwar. This river, which is considered to be among the holiest in India, has just become the site of one of the largest dam construction projects in all of India.
The area surrounding the Omkeshwar Shiva linga is continuously refilled with water. In most temples, the Shiva lingam is constructed in the center of the womb, and the peak is directly above it. But, in the Omkareshwar Lingam temple, the Shiva lingam is not located underneath the dome.
The fact that the statue of Lord Mahakaleshwar may be found on the highest point of the temple is one of its defining characteristics. There are others who claim that Omkara may be found atop this peak.

According to mythology, King Mandhata worshipped Lord Shiva at the bank of the Narmada River. After being delighted by King Mandhata’s penance, the Lord granted him a darshan, imparted his everlasting light, and remained here as Omkareshwar. In subsequent times, the peak has been given the name Omkar-Mandhata.
There is also the tale of the Vindhya Mountain, which is said to have been angered by the sage Narada in the past. Vindhya was resolute in his mission to disprove Narada’s claims and began doing rigorous penance with the intention of winning over Lord Shiva. A severe penance was performed by the mountain for a period of six months at the site of Onkareshwar Linga, which was situated on the banks of the river Narmada.
As a reward for his self-denial, Lord Shiva himself made an appearance before him and suggested that he make a wish for a blessing. After hearing Lord Shiva make such a statement, the Vindhyachal prayed to God to grant him insight. Pray at the same time that you may remain rooted in this location for all of time and space.
Lord Shiva complied with the earnest desire of all the gods and the sages and created two halves of each of the lings. One of its components is referred to by the name Onkar, while the other is referred to either as God or Amaleshwar.
