In 2022, one day after Govardhan Puja and two days after Diwali, Hindus will celebrate Bhai Dooj (generally). On Bhai Dooj, sisters bring their brothers over to do their aarti, place a tika on their heads, and pray to the gods for long life. The traditions and celebrations are identical, despite the fact that it is known by different names in different parts of the country.

In northern India, it is known as Bhai Dooj, and in western India, it is known as Bhau Beej. In southern India, it is celebrated as Yama Dwitiya. Bhai Dooj celebrations mark the culmination of the five-day Diwali holiday.

Story of Bhai Dooj Festival:

Other names for Bhaiya Dooj 2022, a holiday that strengthens the bond between brothers, include Bhau Beej, Bhatra Dwitiya, Bhai Dwitiya, and Bhathru Dwitiya. Lord Yama, also referred to as Yamaraja, and his sister the Yamuna has a long connection with this festival. The tale is what happens after that.

It had been a while since she had seen his brother, so the Yamuna decided one day to bring him to her house. Her brother, Yama, the ruler of death, used to be so busy with his tasks that he never had time to see his sister. He was unable to decline Yamuna’s kind invitation to go to her house and eat with her, though.

On the second of Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month, Yama finally got to see his sister. When the Yamuna saw his brother at her door, she was ecstatic. She gave him some candy, did his aarti, put a tika on his forehead, and invited him inside. Yama was brought to tears by the love and respect his sister gave him, given that he was the god of death and no one had ever asked him to their home.

Before leaving, Yamaraja promised the Yamuna that he would fulfill her wish. The Yamuna begged him for a favor: “Any brother who visits his sister on this day and eats the food she provides should have a long and happy life, and early death should not befall him.” Bhai Dooj was celebrated as a holiday ever after.
