The Bhavani temple at Tuljapur is one of the four major Shaktipithas in Maharashtra, along with the temples of Renuka in Mahur, Mahalaxmi in Kolhapur, and Saptashringi in Vani. The temple has a lot of tales attached to it. According to one myth, the demon Madhu-Kaitabh was inflicting devastation on both the gods and people.

They came to Lord Brahma for assistance after being unable to come up with a solution, and he suggested they consult the Goddess Shakti. She assumed the shape of a destroyer, and with the help of the other (Sapta) Mata Varahi, Brahmi, Vaishnavi, Kaumaari Indraani, and Saambhavi, she defeated the demon and brought about peace.

On this hill stands the Tuljabhawani temple. Another legend tells the tale of a wise man by the name of “Kardam.” Following his passing, his wife “Anubuti” had offered a sacrifice along the banks of the river “Mandakini” in order for Bhavani mata to take care of their little kid. The demon “Kukur” attempted to interrupt “Anubuti” as she was practicing her penance, but the Goddess stepped in to protect her and destroyed the demon. The Goddess Bhavani became known as Tulja Bhavani as of that day.
