The four Deva Rishis (sages) Sankara, Sanakasa, Sanatkumara, and Sanatsujata are said to have been immortal and to have appeared as little children of five years of age, according to a tale. The Deva Rishis had an incredible amount of knowledge and dedication, but they were oblivious to the world around them. Their ignorance was so profound that they did not even realize they were naked. They paid a visit to Kailasa, the residence of Shiva, in order to worship him one day. Also arriving at the same time were the deities Sachi Devi, Swaha Devi, Goddess Saraswathi, and Goddess Lakshmi.

The young Subramanyeswara was sitting on the lap of his mother, the goddess Parvati. He was perplexed when he saw the disparity between the fully attired goddesses and the naked Deva Rishis. Since he was at a loss for what to do, he began to giggle, and his mother reprimanded him for his conduct. Later on, when Subramanyeswar understood how foolish he had been, he asked for and received permission to do his penance in the shape of a snake for a number of years. Mopidevi is the name that was afterward given to the location where Subramanyeswar undertook his penance. The presiding god, known as Subramanyeswar Swami, who takes the form of the Shiva Lingam, is also referred to as the God of Snakes.

According to the ancient texts known as the Sthala Puranas, Subramanyeswar Swamy served as a Swayambhu at this temple. Veeravarapu Parvathalu, a potter, once had a dream in which Subramanyeswar Swamy came and told him that there was a Lingam in the anthill in the hamlet of Mopidevi. The artisan who made the pots was a devout follower of Subramanyeswar Swamy.

The next day, the potter related his dream to the other residents of the community. They went to the anthill and immediately began excavating the ground there. They were taken aback when they discovered a Swayambhu Lingam. Clay was used by Parvathalu to create more statues of Nandi, Garuda, and the Cock since these animals have a special place in Subramanyeswar Swamy’s heart. After that, he put the deities in the Bhatti, which is a kind of furnace, and cooked them until the clay idols hardened and kept their form.
