The Mahanandi temple was first erected around 1500 years ago and has since undergone several phases of restoration and reconstruction. The temple was constructed by the Chalukya Kings, and the architecture of the temple demonstrates the dominance of the Chalukyas at that time. The Swayambu Shiva Lingam representation of Mahanandeeswara Swamy serves as the presiding deity of the temple.
Prior to visiting the temple, devotees may partake in a holy bath at the Mahanandi temple at either Pushkarni or Koneru, both of which include Pancha Lingams, the most important of which is the Varuna Lingam in the center. The temple is particularly well-known for the existence of “Kalyani,” which is the name of the tank that serves as part of the temple complex. The water in the tank is maintained in such a way that its depth does not go above five feet.
