Airavateswarar Temple Darasuram History Distance From Kumbakonam

During the Chola Empire, between the years 1146 and 1172 CE, the Chola King Rajaraja II was responsible for the construction of the Airavatesvara Temple. Ayirattali was the Cholas’ secondary capital, and Darasuram was an integral element of the city complex that it was located in.

During his reign, the king was a supporter of Tamilian art and architecture, and he was responsible for the construction of a great number of new temples and monuments. In centuries past, this temple occupied a far larger physical space than it does now.

According to the inscriptions of the temple that have been discovered to this day, the temple, much like the Srirangam Temple, had seven streets and seven courtyards. The whole primary architecture has been damaged or destroyed, and the sole surviving structure is the court with the principal shrine. The gopurams have fallen into disrepair as well.

On the other hand, it is not apparent what motivated this damage. It is said that subsequent Hindu monarchs renovated and repaired the temples once they fell under their control.
