Why seeing Moon on Ganesha Chaturthi is prohibited?
A religious custom dictates that one must refrain from gazing at the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi since doing so is deemed rude. On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, the sight of the moon generates a condition known as Mithya Dosham, which is also known as Mithya Kalank (). This condition results in a wrongful accusation of having stolen something.
Traditions preserved in the Puranas state that Lord Krishna was falsely accused of stealing a precious diamond by the name of Syamantaka. This accusation was made against Lord Krishna. Sage Narada, upon seeing the trials that Lord Krishna was going through, disclosed that Lord Krishna had seen the moon on the day of Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi, which is the reason he is plagued with Mithya Dosha. Sage Narada’s revelation came when Sage Narada saw that Lord Krishna was going through these trials. After seeing everything that Lord Krishna was going through, the Sage Narada had an epiphany as a result of his observations.
Sage Narada went on to tell Lord Krishna that God Chandra had been cursed by Lord Ganesha, and that the curse said that anybody who caught sight of the moon on Shukla Chaturthi during the Bhadrapada month would be plagued with Mithya Dosha, as well as tainted and dishonored in the society.
Sage Narada then went on to tell Lord Krishna that God Chandra had been cursed by Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha had imposed the curse. During the whole Ganesha Chaturthi festival, Lord Krishna abstained from food in order to cleanse his body of Mithya Dosha. This was Lord Krishna’s response to the advice given to him by the Sage Narada.\
