History of Temple

Tiruchanur is the abode of Sri Padmavati Devi, the beloved consort of Lord Venkateswara. The shrine is popularly known as “Alarmelmangapuram” (alar-lotus flower, mel-top, manga-god, puram-city) or Alimelumangapuram. According to temple legend, the place is popularly known as “Alaramelmangapuram,” as Goddess Padmavati emerged as Goddess Mahalakshmi on a golden lotus in the center of the tank (Padmasarovaram) in the temple enclosure. It is said that before visiting Tirumala Venkateswara Swamy during pilgrimages, one should visit Sri Padmavati Amma, who is enshrined in Tiruchanur.

The arrival of Goddess Padmavati is narrated in many Puranas. According to a legend, there was once a holy Brahmin named Pundarika. Despite performing all the duties prescribed in the Shastras, he did not have a son. Finally, at the age of 50, a son was born to him, whom he named Madhava. He carefully brought up the boy to excel in all his studies. He married a devotee. After some time, Madhav deviated from the path of righteousness and followed another woman.

After her death, he wandered like a madman. One day, he followed a group of pilgrims going to Tirumala. His sins were washed away when he took a bath in the holy Sudarshana lake and climbed the hills. There was a voice from the sky asking him to bathe in Swami Pushkarini and seek the blessings of Varaha Swami. Later, he was born to King Mitravarma of Thondamandal and was known as Akasharaju.
