It is said that the King of the Gods, Indra, wed Skanda’s daughter Deivayanai and gave her his elephant Airavatam as a part of his dowry gift. Indra’s fortunes started to wane following Airavatam’s departure. It is stated that Subramanyar made an offer to return the white elephant, but Indra, who was constrained by convention, refused to accept a gift and demanded that the elephant face him. As a result, the picture of the elephant in this temple similarly faces east.
