King Chandraprabha was in charge of the town of Vimalapur, which was near the Saraswathi River. He was married twice. A long time ago, the King went shooting in a thick forest. He looked up and saw a group of women praying near the pond. He asked one of the women what the Puja was all about and what it meant. The women said that they were doing Swarna Gowri Vrat to make sure that all of their dreams came true. The story made the king happy, so he put the holy thread around his right wrist and returned to his house.

The King told both of his wives about the Vrata. The story he told made his first wife angry, so she took the thread off his right wrist and threw it on a dead plant. After a few days, the dry plant started to grow new leaves. When the second wife of the king saw this happening, she pulled a thread off the plant and tied it around her wrist. She did the ceremony. She was happy and rich, and the King loved her.

Because she didn’t know about the Vrata, the first wife had to leave the house. She lived in the woods and went through a lot of pain. She could not be comforted. She prayed to Goddess Parvati and cried because she felt bad about what she had done. The Goddess then came to her and comforted her. The queen realised she had made a mistake, so she devotedly kept the Swarna Gowri Vrat. Godess Gowri gave her husband happiness and love.
