According to the Hindu texts, it is said that during the Samudra Manthan, Lord Shiva swallowed all of the poison that was expelled from the ocean. Shiva absorbed all of this poison. Lord Shiva drank it since it has the power to wipe out every living thing on the planet. By swallowing all of the poison and storing it in his throat, Lord Shiva was able to save the planet and all of the living creatures in it.

Because of this, many refer to him as Neelkantha. Following this, all of the demons and gods presented Lord Shiva with an offering of Ganga Jal and milk in the hope that it would lessen the impact of the potentially lethal poison.

This whole event took place during the month of Sawan, and it is because of this that people go from all around to bring Ganga Jal and present it to Lord Shiva. Additionally, it is forbidden to consume milk during the month of Sawan.
