The legend behind the Pongal Festival:

The southern states and the Tamil population of India are the ones that celebrate Pongal the most. It was identified as a Dravidian harvest celebration during the Sangam Age, which lasted from around 200 B.C. to 300 A.D., and the Sanskrit Scriptures also make reference to this fact.

During the Sangam era, maidens engaged in a ritual known as Pavai Nonbu. This ritual was particularly well-known throughout the Pallava dynasty. It took place during the month of Margazhi, which is a Tamil month. On this day, girls prayed for rain and prosperity to fall upon our nation so that they might celebrate their day.

They abstain from milk and any items made from it for the whole of the month. They don’t even bother to oil their hair, and when they talk to one another, they don’t show any restraint in the language that they use. A second routine included taking an early shower. After carving an idol of the goddess Katyayani out of damp sand, they adore the finished product.

On the first day of the Tamil month of Thai, they finally put an end to their act of penance. Pongal came into being in ancient times as a result of the practices and rituals that were in place at the time.

Rituals followed on Surya Pongal:

On the second day of the carnival, in addition to praying, there are also several rites that are being carried out. In a pot made of earthenware that is placed outside the home, the rice and milk are brought to a boil, and the resulting offering is presented to the Lord Sun together with other sacrifices.

People dress in the clothing and accessories that are typical for their culture. The husband and wife are responsible for disposing of the ceremonial utensils once they have used them during the rites. The vessel that must be used for the process of boiling rice is attached to a turmeric plant. The following products and services are also included:

1. The backdrop is embellished with two sugarcane twigs as a decoration.
2. The use of coconut and bananas brings out the flavor of the dishes.

The act of tracing a customary path in front of the home with white lime powder is the Puja rite that is performed the most often. The woman of the home performs this rite first thing in the morning after she has finished her morning bath.
