According to the ancient Hindu calendar, Parsva Ekadashi is one of the good vrats that occurs on the Ekadashi (11th day) of the Shukla Paksha (the bright fortnight of the moon) in the lunar month of “Bhadrapada.” It occurs between the months of August and September.
At the time of “Dakshinayana Punyakalam,” or the night of the Gods and Goddesses, is when Parsva Ekadashi falls. This Ekadashi celebration is particularly fortunate because it occurs during the “Chaturmas” season. It is a widely held belief that those who observe the Parsva Ekadashi vrat will be forgiven for all of their past processes.
In India, Parsva Ekadashi is celebrated with a tremendous amount of zeal and dedication. In various parts of the nation, it is known by names like “Vamana Ekadashi,” “Jayanti Ekadashi,” “Jaljhilini Ekadashi,” and “Parivartini Ekadashi.” The term “Parsva Parivartini Ekadashi” comes from Hindu mythology, which holds that Lord Vishnu rests during this time and switches from sleeping on his left side to his right side. On the day of Parsva Ekadashi, Lord Vamana, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, is honored in several locations. A person will receive the heavenly blessings of Sri Hari Vishnu, the protector of this universe, by adhering to the auspicious vrat of this Ekadashi.

Rituals for Parsva Ekadashi:
- On the day of Parsva Ekadashi, devotees maintain a fast. Normal observation lasts for 24 hours, from the Ekadashi sunrise to the Dwadashi tithi. Even on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha, or “Dashami,” some devotees only consume one meal, and that too before dawn (early morning ). After praying to Lord Vishnu and feeding a Brahmin, the fast is broken.
- Due to health issues, some devotees are unable to complete this stringent fast; however, they can continue partial fasting. Dairy, fruit, and vegetable consumption is permitted. Even those who are not fasting are prohibited from consuming grains, rice, or beans on Parsva Ekadashi.
- In addition to refraining from eating during Parsva Ekadashi, those who observe this vrat are encouraged to engage in activities that will draw them closer to God. In order to honor Lord Vishnu on this day, one must perform Vedic mantras or bhajans. Reading Hindu holy scriptures like “Vishnu Sahasranaam” is highly recommended.
