It is stated that Raghavendra Swamy meditated for a total of twelve years in Panchamukhi before finally settling down in Mantralaya. This is a significant religious destination for devotees who are traveling to Mantralayam.

The story of Panchamukhi Hanuman is a fascinating one that goes all the way back to the time of the Ramayana. Lord Hanuman traveled to Pathala Lokha with the intention of eliminating Mahiravana, who was responsible for keeping Rama and Lakshmana as captives in that realm. The only way to successfully kill him was to simultaneously consume all five of the bees that were holding onto his life. Hanuman needed to use all five of his faces to accomplish this task. The Lord accepted his request, and each of his faces, including his own, was another form of Lord Vishnu.

These faces took the form of Garuda, Ugra Narasimha, Varaha, Hayagriva, and his own face. Hanuman was clueless about the way to Pathalaloka at the time when Mahiravana was transporting Rama and Lakshmana there. Vibhishana informed him that there were only two ways to get there; one was by going via the palace of Ravana, and the other was by going through a cave in Dandakaranya that was guarded by a goddess called Yerukalamba.

On the peak of a hillside is the grotto in which Sri Rayaru, in his previous incarnation as Guru Raghavendra, did tapas for a period of twelve years. The rock formations that can be seen in the area around the hillock are definitely worth checking out. Even in modern times, the cave has been kept in the same condition as it was back then, and the granite stairs that go up to the cave temple number somewhere about fifty.

Once you have climbed to the peak of the mound, a congested path will take you to the innermost chamber of the cave temple. One might get the sense that they are in a sacred location when they are within the cave. It is not surprising that Guru Raghavendra picked the cave to do his penance there since the location is peaceful and maintains an air of holiness even now.
