Mantralayam was once known as Manchali, and it got its name from the local goddess Manchalamma, who is revered there. It is said that Raghavendra Swamy asked Manchalamma for the land that was necessary for the Brundavan Temple in Mantralaya, and as a result, worshippers are expected to first visit the temple dedicated to Manchalamma before making their way to the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Temple.

The Manchalamma Temple is home to a hall that was designed to resemble a miniature temple complete with a vimana. The vibrant vimana is decked up with a number of depictions of Parvathi in her goddess form. A three-foot-tall idol is placed on a raised platform within the sanctuary to serve as the primary god.
