Durga Pooja is one of the most famous festivals in Kolkata which is performed during the time of the Navaratri festival. This festival is celebrated for 10 days, but the main Durga pooja will start on the Sixth day of the Navaratri festival. According to Mythology, Goddess Durga emerged from the power of all the gods to kill the evil demon. In the year 2022 Navaratri festival starts on September 26, 2022, and ends on October 05, 2022.
In Kolkata main Navaratri festival starts on the sixth day of the festival and the eighth day or Ashtami is celebrated grandly and is also known as Durga Ashtami. The tenth day is the main festival Vijaya Dashami.

The main festival during Navaratri starts on the sixth day in Kolkata. Beautifully decorated idols of Goddess Durga are brought and placed as well as decorated Pandals in every street. Each and every day in the Navaratri festival the idols of Goddess Durga are decorated in various forms and varieties of sweets are kept near Goddess. In some places of Kolkata, The idol of goddess Durga is accompanied by Lord Ganesha.
Chokku daan Ritual in Kolkata Durga Pooja:
At starting of the Navaratri festival, The idols of Goddess Durga are painted except for the Eyes of the Goddess Durga. On the day of Mahalaya, the ritual of inviting the Goddess on the Earth is carried out and on that day the eyes of the Goddess are painted. This famous ritual is called Chokku Daan.
On the sixth day of Navaratri main pooja begins in Kolkata. The festival ends on the tenth day of the Dasara festival. During the morning of the Dasara festival, special poojas are performed and after that idols of Goddess Durga are immersed.
