Gita Jayanthi is one of the most important days for Hindus. Gita Jayanthi is the day on which Bhagavad Geetha was born. According to the Hindu Dharma, Bhagavad Geetha is referred to as Panchama Vedham.
Lord Krishna told Bhagavad Geetha to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. Although Lord Krishna told Bhagavad Geeta to Arjuna this was narrated as a book by Saint Vedavyas. Gita Jayanthi is celebrated as a festival in almost all parts of India but will be called slightly different in name. The Bhagavad Geeta is also called Maha Grantham and contains 700 verses. It is believed that Knowledge regarding every aspect of Human life can be provided by Bhagavad Geetha. In the olden days, people use to read and by heart all the verses in the Bhagavad Geetha and used apply the knowledge acquired in day-to-day life.

Every year Gita Jayanthi is celebrated in the month of Margashirsha. According to the Georgian Calendar, Gita Jayanthi is celebrated every year in the month of December-January. In some places, there is a ritual of practicing fasting on the day of Gita Jayanthi. People perform special pujas to Lord Krishna on the day of Gita Jayanthi and also special pujas will be performed to the book of the Bhagavad Geetha if present. After puja, people wish to visit the temple and also to do darshan of Lord Krishna or any other incarnation of Lord Vishnu. In some places, people observe complete fasts throughout the day, and in some places, people take food in the evening according to regional traditions.
