Uttarayana Punya Kalam:

Uttarayana Punya Kalam is the auspicious time when God Sun changes his way from Dakshinayanam to Uttarayanam. According to the Telugu calendar, Ayanam means a period of six months. God Sun travels from Dakshinam to Uttaram in a period of six months. When the God Sun changes his way from Dakshinam to Uttaram, that day is celebrated as Uttarayana Parva Kalam. On the same day, the Makara Sankranthi festival is also observed.

In many areas in South India, there is a ritual of observing a fast up to a particular muhurta on the day of Uttarayana Parva Kala. On the day of Uttarayana Parva Kala, there is a practice of giving Tharpanam to the ancestors.
