When is the Thaipusam festival celebrated in 2024?
In 2024, the Thaipusam festival will be celebrated on 26 January 2024.
The name of the Tamil month, “Thai,” and the name of a star, “Pusam,” are combined to form the phrase “Thaipusam,” which literally translates to “star of the month.” This star thus reaches its zenith during the month of Thai, which coincides with the celebration of Thaipusam.
The Hindu holiday known as Thaipusam is celebrated to honor Lord Murugan, who is considered to be the god of battle in the Hindu religion. According to Hindu legend, Goddess Parvati bestowed on Lord Murugan the spear known as “Vel” so that he may vanquish the monster known as “Soorapadman.”
Devotees worship Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva, on the auspicious day of Thaipusam with the hope of obtaining his favor and ridding their lives of all the negative and harmful qualities and characteristics. This holiday is observed mostly in the states located in India’s southern region. The festival of Thaipusam is celebrated with great importance in countries outside India, such as Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mauritius, Singapore, Guadalupe, Thailand, and even South Africa, where considerable populations of Tamil people live.

What are the rituals followed on the Thaipusam?
Anyone who participates in Thaipusam begins the preparations for the festivities forty-eight hours in advance by abstaining from food and engaging in prayer. At both the time of gathering the kavadi and the time of presenting the gifts to Murugan, the carriers of the kavadi are required to carry out an elaborate ceremony.
They do this by abstaining from sexual activity and only eating satvik, or spiritually pure, food once a day. The Kavadi-bearers adhere to a life of severe discipline and renounce all activities associated with the outside world. Participants in the event are expected to wear attire dominated by the colors yellow and orange.
On the festival day of Thaipusam, the devotees shave their heads and then make their way to the temple of their respective deities. Throughout the whole of their journey, they partake in a variety of acts of devotion, such as carrying a variety of kavadi, also known as burdens.

The most basic version of kavadi is just carrying a pitcher of milk with you, while more severe forms include piercing the mouth, cheeks, or skin with metal skewers. The act of piercing not only provides the bearer with enormous ability of endurance but also serves as a continual reminder to the followers of Lord Murugan.
The Kavadi is set down by the bearers after they have completed their trip. In the final step of the gratitude ritual, honey or milk is poured over the statue representing the god. Yellow fruits and flowers are presented as an offering to Lord Murugan by devotees. When devotees who have used skewers and hooks on various areas of their bodies arrive at the temple, the metal utensils are removed immediately, and hot ash is used to cure any wounds that have been caused.
To everyone’s great astonishment, there are no indications of discomfort or bleeding, and there is also no trace of any scarring at all. The devotees’ faith is strengthened as a result of this.
