Rishyashringa-giri is a neighboring hill that is said to have been the location of a hermitage that was inhabited by Rishi Vibhandaka and his son Rishyashringa. It is stated that as Sri Adi Shankara was strolling by the Tunga River, he noticed a cobra with its hood up, offering protection from the blazing sun to a frog that was in the process of giving birth. Inspired by this, Sri Adi Shankara chose the location as the place to remain and educate his followers.

According to tradition, Sri Adi Shankara chose this location as the place to reside and teach his disciples. He remained in this location for a period of twelve years because he was astonished by the fact that natural predators had behaved in ways that defied their inclinations. Additionally, Sri Adi Shankaracharya founded mathas in the northern part of India (at Jyotirmath, close to Badrinath), the eastern part of India (at Puri), and the western part of India (at Dwaraka).

  • In line with the practice that was initiated by Adi Shankara, the maha is in charge of the Yajur Veda (even though the Krishna (Black) Yajurveda is more prevalent in South India; but, in accordance with the Smarta tradition, the maha has jurisdiction over both of these Yajurvedas). The head of the matha is given the title of Jagadguru, which literally translates to “teacher to the world,” and also carries the name Shankaracharya as a title. Both of these titles are given in addition to the name.
