Skanda Shasti also called Kanda Shasti is dedicated to Lord Subramanya Swamy and is mainly performed in Tamil state and both Telugu states. Skanda Shasti is mainly observed by all Tamil Brahmins and some families in Telugu states. In the Telugu calendar, Shasti tithi is observed in both Sukla paksha and Krishna Paksha. According to some traditions, some people will perform Shasti vratam in both the Shasti Tithi ( Sukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha). In some places, Shasti Vratam will be performed in Krishna paksha Shasti Tithi before Amavasya. In some regions, Skanda Shasti vratham is performed for 5 days in Karthika Masam beginning with Shasti Tithi.

Normally Skanda Shasti vratham will be celebrated every month Shukla paksha Shasti. Lord Subramanya Swamy is otherwise called Lord Skanda, Lord Muruga and etc. According to the Puranas, it is known that Lord Skanda is the son of Lord Shiva and Lord Parvathi Devi. There is a ritual of performing Fasting on the day of Skanda Shasti. Skanda Shasti Vratam and pooja are mainly performed for children and also to seek the blessings of the Lord Muruga.
