Sholingur Temple Opening Closing Timings Today
Once again, Lord Vishnu showed the Narasimha Avataaram to the Saptha rishis who were doing penance at Sholingur. The Narasimha Avataaram had previously been performed by Lord Vishnu at Ahobilam (in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh). Because of this, it is considered to be among the holiest of the “Divya Desams on the Hill” in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
Within twenty-four minutes (one Kadigai or one ‘Naazhigai’), Lord Narasimha bestowed the title of “Brahma Rishi” to Sage Vishwamitra, who had been doing penance in this location. In the footsteps of the great sage, the Saptha Rishis came to Sholingur to do austerities in order to get a glimpse of the Narasimha Avataaram.
They prayed that they would be granted this glimpse within the next twenty-four minutes. As a result, many think that if they remain here for twenty-four minutes, they will reach Moksham.

According to an urban legend, Lord Narayana not only took multiple incarnations on this planet to reform the people, but he also despatched His messengers as preceptors to carry out this task for him. Doddacharya of Chozhasimhapuram, who later became known as Sholingur, was one of these preceptors. He lived almost 470 years ago and dedicated his life to serving Lord Yoga Narasimhar.
Doddacharya was a descendant of Sri Mudaliandan, who was also known as Dasarathi. Sri Mudaliandan was a nephew of Saint Ramanuja (1200 AD), and Doddacharya was a descendant of Dasarathi. When Dasarathi was younger, he often went to Sreerangam with his uncle Saint Ramanuja to bathe in the ghat located on the Cauvery River. During these early morning strolls, he was exposed to a number of Saint Ramanuja’s sermons and was able to absorb their wisdom.
Doddacharya, much like Ramanuja, took all necessary actions to spread Visishtadwaitha and preserve the temples that had been consecrated by the hymns of the Alwars. His ancestors are still responsible for maintaining the temples that are perched atop the hills in Sholingur, as well as the Bhaktochita Swami temple that is located at the base of the hills and is where the Utsava idols of the hill temple are kept.

Several miracles were done by Sri Mudaliandan and his successor, who was the first Doddacharya. These miracles were documented in holy places such as Kancheepuram, Azhagarkoil in Madurai, Thiruchithrakoodam (Chidambaram), Tirumala, and Sholingur itself. Even to this day, on the third day of the Vaikasi Brahmotsavam in Kancheepuram, one of the miracles is celebrated by bringing Lord Varadaraja out of the temple as he is mounted on Garuda.
This is a commemoration of an event that occurred centuries ago. As soon as the Lord enters the main door of the tower, the image of the Lord is concealed from view by the general audience using two enormous umbrellas, and the ritual known as “Harathi” is carried out. This technique is often referred to as “Doddacharyar Swami Sevai.”
It is said that the Doddacharya, who at the time was living in Sholingur, was unable to attend the Kancheepuram festival on one of the occasions. While he was standing on the banks of the Brahma Theertham, which are holy water sources that are also known as Thakkan Kulam, he communicated his incapability to the Lord.
Doddacharya was there when the Lord, in all of His entrancing glory, came before him while Garuda, the mysterious bird with vast wings that flies the Lord, was nearby. The Lord blessed Doddacharya. In order to honor the memory of this momentous occasion, a temple was constructed on the banks of Thakkan Kulam.
Within this temple is an idol carved from stone depicting Lord Varadaraja riding Garuda. At the Parthasarathi Temple in Thiruvallikeni (also known as Triplicane), one may also see a Moolavar idol that is quite similar to the one described above. As the one who hurried to save the elephant King Gajendra, the Lord of this place has been praised by Thirumangai Alwar as the one who is responsible for this.
