In several North Indian states, the month of Shravan is also referred to as the month of Sawan. According to the Hindu texts, it is said that during the Samudra Manthan, Lord Shiva swallowed all of the poison that was expelled from the ocean. Shiva absorbed all of this poison. Lord Shiva drank it since it has the power to wipe out every living thing on the planet. By swallowing all of the poison and storing it in his throat, Lord Shiva was able to save the planet and all of the living creatures in it.
