The main deities of the temple are Lord Shiva in his garb as Agneeswarar and Goddess Parvathi in her guise as Karpagambal. The temple is dedicated to both of these forms of the goddess. One of the nine Navagraha sthalas can be located in the Cauvery Delta. This particular Sthala is dedicated to Sukran, which is also referred to as the planet Venus.
This particular Sthala is known as Kanjanur. Agneeswarar, the primary deity of this temple, assumes the form of a lingam and is said to be a representation of Lord Sukran. This is in contrast to the other temples that make up the Navagraha.
