The Palathandayuthapani temple is the oldest temple on this Palani hill. The “third force” of Murugan’s “six force” residences resides at this temple. This town’s Puranic names are “Thiruavinankudi” and “Thenpothikai.” This temple’s Lord Muruga is also referred to as “Kuthanya Velayuthar” and “Dandayuthapani.” The unique aspect of this temple is that Pokhar Siddhar built a Murugan statue made in “Navabhashan” utilizing the Siddha “alchemy art” that has the ability to benefit the worshippers.
The Puranas state that after his older brother Vinayaka had stolen the “Fruit of Wisdom” from Shiva and Parvati, Lord Muruga arrived and lived on this mountain. No matter how much his parents, Lord Shiva and Parvati, beg him for peace, Murugan has vowed to remain in the Palani mountain. Later, when Murugan appeared to him, an elderly Tamil woman who had come to this location to worship commended him, calling him “fruit you,” which is Tamil for “you are smart.” This is the primary reason for this temple was named Palani.
One of the best Tamil siddhars is “Bogar” Siddhar. Additionally, he has Ashtama Siddhis. Bhogar arrived at the Palani hill without performing any penance, thus Bhoka Siddhar, at the behest of Mother Parvati, Murugan, and the principal Siddha “Agathiyar,” set about creating a “Navabhashana idol” for Murugan. It took Bogar nine years to craft this Navabhashana idol. This Navabhashana idol was created using a mixture of more than “4000” different herbs. To create the Navabhashana idol, 81 Siddhars worked with Bogar’s instructions.
This magnificent Navabhashana statue was created by Sage Bhoga Munivar for the welfare of the populace. When eaten by worshippers, the anointing ingredients used to anoint this idol—sandalwood, Vibhuti, Paneer, and Panchamirtam—have the divine power to heal all manner of physical maladies. Both Bogar Siddha’s samadhi and a separate shrine may be seen on this Palani hill.
