Dev Deepawali festivities in Varanasi:
The complex Dev Deepawali tradition of Varanasi includes a yearly calendar of celebrations that is strictly followed. The ritual starts with Ganesh Vandana or the giving of prayers and flowers to Lord Ganesh. Following that, Vedic mantras are recited in the background as 41 young girls and 21 Brahmins offer lit earthen lamps, also known as diyas or deepdan. Many worshippers take a Ganges bath on this auspicious day, known as Kartik Snan. It is believed that this practice can atone for misdeeds. Many households also commemorate Bhoj, a meal-giving ritual that comes after Akhand Ramayan (chanting of the Ramayana).
At the ghats, there is a religious element as well as a memory of martyrs. This is accomplished by aarti to Ganga Mata and praying to her. When wreaths are laid at Amar Jawan Jyoti at Dashashwamedh Ghat and at the neighboring Rajendra Prasad Ghat by police officers and members of the three military forces, Ganga Seva Nidhi organizes this. Patriotic songs are also sung to mark this occasion.
