In the Hindu festival of Diwali, on the day known as the Trayodashi Tithi, an offering called a Deepam is lit in front of the house as a prayer to Yamaraj, the deity of death in Hinduism, in the hopes of warding off untimely deaths in the family. When carried out for Yamraj, this ceremony is referred to as Deepdan or Deepam by its respective name.

When it is time for sandhya, often known as dusk, the Deepak is lit up and moved to the front yard of the house. It is believed that presenting Deepdan to Lord Yama Raja would make him pleased and would protect members of the family from untimely deaths.

How will the Yama Deepam ritual be carried out?

In the evening, thirteen lanterns made from wheat flour and lit with oil are placed outside the house with their flames facing south (in the direction of Lord Yama). These lanterns are said to bring good luck. A light is never switched such that it faces south, with the exception of today being the one and only exception.

Significance of the Yama Deepam Ritual:

It is said in the ancient books of Hinduism that the lighting of diyas is done in order to placate Lord Yama, the Hindu god of death. It is believed that this would result in a joyful existence in the hereafter.

People have the mistaken belief that if they light oil lamps in front of the primary entrances to their homes, it will aid in protecting their families from any possible threats that may endanger the lives of their members. This is a common fallacy.
