In the first iteration of the temple, Sri Parthasarathi served as the principal deity. In the year 1130 A.D., Sri Ramanuja introduced the deity known as Sri Govindaraja. The Yadavaraya Dynasty presented a number of presents to the temple in order to carry out essential repairs and to embellish the chariot with ornaments.

After 1506 AD, when the Vijayanagara Dynasty was in power, the temple began to gain more significance, and in the years that followed, several emperors contributed to the temple’s development in their own unique ways.
