The words “Thai” (the name of a Tamil month) and “Pusam” (the name of a star) are combined to form the word “Thaipusam.” This star is therefore at its maximum peak during the Thai month on the occasion of Thaipusam.

The Hindu God of war, Lord Murugan, celebrates Thaipusam to remember his victory. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati handed Lord Murugan a spear called “Vel” so he might slay the demon Soorapadman. The devotees worship Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva, on the auspicious day of Thaipusam in order to ask for his blessing to banish all the evil and undesirable features from their lives. The southern Indian states are where this holiday is primarily observed. Additionally, Thaipusam is quite significant.
A Thaipusam observer begins the 48-hour preparation process for the festivities by fasting and praying. When choosing the kavadi and when presenting offerings to Murugan, the Kavadi-bearers must follow a complex process. As a result, they practice celibacy and consume only one meal per day of pure, satvik cuisine. The Kavadi-bearers abstain from all worldly pursuits and lead a life of extreme discipline. Devotees dress in yellow and orange attire as part of the ceremony.
