According to the tale that is associated with this temple, Vishnu took on this appearance (the head of a lion and the body of a human being) after preventing his disciple Prahlada’s father Hiranyakashipu from carrying out an attempt to kill Prahlada. The idol of Varaha Narasimha is coated with sandalwood paste throughout the year, with the exception of the day known as Akshaya Trutiya. This gives it the appearance of a linga.
The current temple was constructed in the 13th century in Odisha by King Langula Narasingha Deva I of Eastern Ganga, and it was dedicated by the king’s son Bhanudeva I in 1268 AD. The temple was designed in the style of Kalinga architecture.

Simhachalam Temple Accommodation Rooms Online Booking and Temple History:
When they were younger, the Four Kumaras went to Vaikuntha, which is the dwelling place of Lord Vishnu. The demigods who guard the entrance of Vaikuntha, known as Jaya-Vijaya, did not recognize the travelers and refused to let them through. They vowed that the two would have to give up their divine status, be born as humans, and spend their lives as regular people on earth as retribution for their wrongdoing.
Vishnu was saddened by the fact that he was unable to reverse the Kumaras’ curse. Later on, he proposed two potential resolutions: either the individuals should serve as followers of Vishnu during their seven human lifetimes, or they could oppose him during their three demonic lives. Jaya-Vijaya was unable to withstand being apart from Vishnu for an extended period of time, so they went with the second option.
Jaya and Vijaya’s early lives as demons were spent as Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha, and they were born at an inauspicious moment during sunset to the wise couple Kashyapa and Diti.
Hiranyaksha assured that the earth would lose its life and fall into the rasatala, the lowest level in the cosmic realm, in order to taunt Lord Brahma and the other gods. In order to return the planet to its original orientation, Vishnu is said to have taken the shape of a pig known as Varaha. Later, after a conflict that lasted for a thousand years, Varaha was successful in killing Hiranyaksha.
Hiranyakashipu made a solemn vow to exact vengeance and prayed to Brahma for guidance. He was granted a boon that rendered him immune to death at any time of day or night, regardless of whether it occurred in the morning or the evening, and regardless of whether it was at the hands of a person or an animal. Sumukha, a guardian, stood in their way as they attempted to approach Vaikuntham under the leadership of Brahma in order to give Vishnu an account of the events that had transpired.
They are successful in meeting Vishnu and communicating Sumukha’s inappropriate behavior to him. Vishnu gave his word that Hiranyakashipu would be put to death, and that Sumukha would be the one to carry out the deed. Sumukha appealed for forgiveness, but Vishnu refused, stating that committing an offense against his worshippers is an act that cannot be forgiven. As per Vishnu’s orders, Sumukha was born as Hiranyakashipu’s son Prahlada.
Throughout his younger years, Prahlada exhibited an unwavering devotion to the god Vishnu. Because of this, he was forced to go through a number of different execution trials. In one of these incidents, the warriors of Hiranyakashipu tossed him off the peak of a hill and then rolled the hill over him. Prahlada was rescued from the water by Vishnu, who leaped over the hill to do so.
Prahlada pleaded with Vishnu to take on a divine form in which the avatars of both Varaha, who had previously dispatched Hiranyaksha, and Narasimha, who was destined to dispatch Hiranyakashipu in the near future, could be seen side by side. Once Hiranyakashipu was killed, Vishnu took the form of Varaha Narasimha, for whom Prahlada constructed a shrine following the death of Hiranyakashipu. The location was given the name Simhachalam, which translates to “lion’s hill,” after worship was performed there. This topic is discussed from the fifth to the twenty-ninth chapter of the tale.
