Visitors to the Sabarimala Temple who are Ayyappa devotees carry the Irumudi, a specially made bag with two chambers. This ritual is known as Palli Kettu or Kettunira. The puja items and other offerings for the Sabarimala gods are kept in the front part of the bag. The personal items are to be stored in the other compartment. But today, there are puja things in both compartments. In the past, people used to carry provisions in the second compartment because the trip would last two to three days.

The day of the pilgrimage is when the “kettunira” rite is performed. Typically, it takes place at a nearby temple or in the participant’s home.

How should the Irumudi Coconut be prepared?

• A little or medium-sized ripe coconut is appropriate. the shell, polish it. Make a hole through any of the coconut’s eyes. Remove the water, then let it air dry. It is time to put ghee in the “mudra” coconut after offering prayers to Lord Ganesha and to Ayyappa (this should be done a few hours prior to the kettunira ceremony).
• The major offering to Lord Ayyappa is this coconut that has been stuffed with ghee. When a devotee enters the shrine, they should chant “Swami Sharanam” to accomplish this. The opening of the coconut is corked and sealed using wax or other sealants when it has been fully filled with new ghee.
• Filling the Bag’s Front Section Rice is taken with both hands and placed in the Irumudi’s front compartment. Three times are done like this. Some believers place the first grain of rice and a betel leaf. Rice can be placed in the front area by family members as well. The coconut with ghee inside is then set on top of the rice in the entrance compartment. On top of the rice, there are also placed coins, bills, betel leaves, and nuts.
• Other puja items, such as camphor, incense sticks, rose water, jaggery, sandal paste, and vibhuthi are wrapped separately and put in the compartment. Filling the Bag’s Rear Section Two coconuts: one for breaking as you ascend the holy 18 steps, and the other for breaking as you exit the temple. For Malikappurathamma, separate containers of malar, avil, turmeric powder, and kumkum are stored at the back section. Vavar Swami consumes pepper in this section. These aforementioned puja objects may also be placed in the front half of the bag if you want to load the back with personal belongings.
• When the Irumudi is full, it represents the god symbolically and is held in respect rather than being kept on the ground. It is typically placed on a sheet or a wool rug. Pujas are performed on the Irumudi in the morning and evening if the trip lasts more than one day. The Irumudi balances on its head while moving.
