The saint Sri Guru Raghavendra Swami, who is credited with achieving samadhi while still physically present in front of his pupils in the 17th century, gave Mantralayam its name. It is said that he was a reincarnation of Prahlada, a Daitya monarch who was rescued by Lord Vishnu in his Narasimha form. He was a Madhwa saint.

The Temple and Mutt “complex” is the primary destination for visitors to this area. The Tungabhadra River is another sight that should not be missed, in addition to the breathtaking sight of the temple elephants and chariots conveying the god around the temple on important occasions. In close proximity to Mantralaya is another well-known temple known as the Panchamukhi Temple of Raichur. It is stated that Sri Guru Raghavendra meditated here for 12 years and that Lord Panchamukha, also known as the five-faced Lord Hanumana, came to him here.
