According to the tradition that is associated with the temple, the monarchs of the region who reigned during the 10th century AD and were known as Nandas were responsible for the construction of a massive number of temples and worshipped their ancestor god, Nandi.

The presence of the cleansed holy water of Pushkarani, which runs continuously throughout the year, is widely regarded as one of the most significant aspects of the Mahananadi temple. A tower known as the Gopuram was erected in the “Badami Chalukyan Style” of architecture and was positioned above the central sanctum.
