The faithful are under the impression that the temple is home to the severed head of Barbarika or Khatushyam, a famous warrior who complied with Krishna’s request to offer his head as a sacrifice before the beginning of the Kurukshetra War.
Before the start of the fight known as the Mahabharata, Barbarika’s last request was to be able to view the conflict known as the Mahabharata. In order to grant this wish, Lord Krishna himself positioned his head on the peak of a mountain so that Barbarika could see the battle. Many years after Kali Yuga commenced, the head was discovered buried in the hamlet of Khatoo (Sikar district) in present-day Rajasthan.

The head was then given to a Brahmin, who worshipped it for a number of days while waiting for heavenly insights about the further steps that were to be taken. After that, the King of Khatu, Roop Singh Chauhan, had a dream in which he was inspired to construct a temple and place the head inside it. After then, on the 11th day of the Shukla Paksha (bright half) of the month of Phalgun, a temple was constructed, and the idol was put inside of it.

The Khatu Mandir is currently not open to the general public for visits.
