The Pallavas also built the temples at Mamallapuram (also known as Mahabalipuram), and their architecture and sculptures are quite similar to those of this temple. It is possible that this is the only temple in Kanchipuram that has not been altered in any way since it was first constructed.
The temple is carved out of sandstone, and its architecture is an exceptional example of the Dravidian style of building. The style of construction was developed in India. There are fifty-eight smaller shrines tucked away in the nooks and crannies of the compound wall that encircles the main shrine at the temple complex. Carvings representing Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva performing a number of different dances may be seen on the main temple. Within the confines of the temple complex, in addition to these smaller shrines, there is also the main hall, a high wall around the enclosure, and a towering gateway called the gopuram.
The primary shrine, also known as the sanctum sanctorum, is composed of sixteen Shivalingas carved out of black granite. Images of various gods and goddesses, including Brahma, Vishnu, Nandi, Durga Maa, and Lord Shiva performing his destructive dance, are carved into the inner and exterior walls of the structure.
In addition, a statue of Nandi stands sentry at the entrance of the building. A highly elegant depiction of Lord Shiva in a sitting position and quietness, known as Dakshinamurti, can be seen on the wall of the temple that faces south. On the other side, however, there is an image of Shiva in the shape of Lingodhbav.
