What is the history of Hampi Virupaksha Temple?

Lord Virupaksha, for whom the temple was constructed, is the partner of Goddess Parvathi, who is venerated as ‘Pampa’ in the area. Lord Virupaksha is also known as the Lord of the Temple. In addition, the original name of Hampi was Pampakshetra, which was derived from the name of the Pampa River, which was also the name of the Thungabadra.

The current location of Hampi was previously home to the Vijayanagar Empire’s bustling capital city. On the other hand, it is stated that the Virupaksha temple was already in existence even before the capital city of the Vijayanagara Kingdom was established in the area. For Virupaksha, a simple edifice was constructed during the Chalukyan and Hoysala eras (9th century A.D.), but the Vijayanagar empire oversaw the expansion of the temple complex and the addition of creative stonework at a later time.

According to the records kept by the Archaeological Survey of India, the temple was constructed by Lokamahadevi, who held the title of queen during the reign of Vikramaditya II. She did it in order to honor her husband’s victory in a fight against the Pallavas of Kanchi. In honor of the queen’s benevolence, various inscriptions refer to the temple as “Lokeshwara Mahasila Prasada.” As a result of this, the name of the temple appears in many places.

During the reign of King Deva Raya II, a “pre-Virupaksha temple” that was initially rather modest expanded significantly, gaining many gopurams and pillared rooms along the way. The ensuing invasions of Vijayanagar by powers from the north were responsible for the destruction of the majority of the Vijayanagar empire and Hampi; however, several sections of the magnificent Virupaksha temple were fortunately spared.
