Festivals Celebrated At Attukal Bhagavathy Temple

Attukal Pongala:
This event is known for having one of the greatest gatherings of women in the world, and it is called Attukal Pongala. Each year, the temple is visited by around 20 million women. When 1.5 million ladies presented Pongal in 1997, the event broke a record that was in the Guinness Book of World Records. The Pongala celebration is a holy event. It is a program that lasts for 10 days.
The event takes place between the months of Makaram and Kumbham in the Malayalam calendar. In most cases, this occurs in February or March. The most important part of the ritual takes place on the day on which the Pooram star aligns with the full moon. Stories about the goddess Kannaki are often told. The collection of tales is called the Kannaki Charitam.
Kuthiyottam:
This unique event, known as Kuthiyottam, is observed only by young men under the age of 12 every year. It is done with the intention of achieving internal and exterior beauty as well as good health, prosperity, and pleasure. It is thought that these young men are the Goddess Mahisasurmardini’s injured troops. On the third day of the festival, these young lads begin a penance that will last for the next seven days in order to cleanse themselves. Attendance in the temple is part of the required penance. In addition, they sleep on mats. Maintain a stringent diet and fall on your face before the Goddess a total of 1008 times each morning.
Thalappoli:
This celebration, known as Thalappoli, is reserved only for young women under the age of 12 years old. The festivities will get underway on the day of the Pongal. Vilakkukettu:
This celebration, known as Vilakkukettu, takes place during the Pongala festival, namely between the first and ninth days. Vilakkukettu is the collective noun for ornamented constructions. The pictures and idols of the Goddesses may be found inside these constructions. Every night during the event, devotees make their way to the temple to bring the constructions there. At the event, musicians perform Chendamelam music in the traditional style.
The Divine Procession:

Peacock dance, Poykuthira dance, Kolkali dance, Theyyam dance, and Kumbha dance are some of the dances that devotees perform.
