The celebrations around Dhanatrayodashi begin many days before the holiday itself is actually observed. People begin to clean their homes and offices and then decorate them with diyas, lights, rangoli, and flowers in preparation for the holiday. The entrance door has been decorated with rangoli designs, which are a traditional art form that is also known for its vibrant colors. In addition to this, the goddess Lakshmi’s footprint can be seen imprinted at the entrance door of the house.

On the day of Dhanatrayodashi, folks get up early and take a bath just after the sun rises. This practice takes place in the wee hours of the morning. The Lakshmi puja is scheduled to take place in the evening, so after the morning rituals have been completed, they move on to the preparations for the puja.

The whole household takes part in the nighttime practice of worshiping Goddess Lakshmi by lighting ghee diyas, offering flowers, kumkum, and Chawal, and doing so with the intention of appeasing her. People worship Lord Kuber on this day with the expectation of receiving double the normal number of blessings and benefits as they would on any other day.

Another tradition that is carried out on the occasion of Dhanatrayodashi is the lighting of the Yamadeep. During this ritual, a diya is lighted outside of one’s home in honor of Yama, who is also known as the Lord of Death.

Yama is a deity who rules over the afterlife. It is a widely held notion that lighting this diya would guard the home from any and all threats, as well as prevent any member of the family from dying away at an untimely age. This Yama Deep will be placed in the South direction outside the house.
