Bichale Sri Raghavendra Swamy Temple History
Over the course of the centuries, during the times of saint Raghavendra Swami (also known as Rayaru), who promoted Dwaita philosophy, it became a prominent centre for Gurukul education. This centre was established by the saintly and erudite scholar Sri Appanachary, who was born in Bichali. Sri Appanachary was the son of a wealthy landlord named Ramasubbanachar, who owned 20 villages as Jagir and 300 acres of fertile land.
This place once went by the name of Japadakatti, and it was a traditional gurukul, also known as an open university. It was founded by Appanacharya on the banks of the Tungabhadra River under an Ashwath Vruksha. Raghavendra Swamy, the mystic saint of Mantralaya, had developed a close relationship with his contemporaries and disciple Appanacharya, and he had stayed with Appanacharya for 13 years doing penance at Bichali Japada katte.
At the time, Appanacharya was 60 years old, making him two years older than Raghavendra Swami, who was more commonly referred to as Rayaru. Because Rayaru resided there and performed the pooja of Sri Moola Rama Devaru in the central hall of the home, where he also used to sleep, Appanacharya’s residence was thought to be a place of divinity by all who visited there.

Rayaru presented Appanacharay with a gift of 12 acres of land at Kaldakuntla, which is located 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) from Mantralaya. Rayaru was pleased with the Appanacharay’s devotional service in administering the Gurukula. Appanacharya first resisted taking the property since he was a wealthy landowner at the time; nevertheless, Rayaru coerced him into taking the land.
Raghavendra Stotra is a constant hymn (Stotra of 32 hymns) recited by the devotees of Saint Raghavendra Swamy of Mantralaya as a community prayer. Appanacharya, as an ardent devotee of Raghavendra Swami, also composed a hymn or chant in honour of his guru called Raghavendra Stotra. Raghavendra Stotra is written in Sanskrit.

Appanacharya constructed a Brindavana, a monument, an open-air shrine to memorialise the 13 years that the saint stayed in Bichali in the shape of a monolithic stone, many years later, after the passing of Raghavendra Swami in a voluntary samadhi at Mantralaya. This happened after Raghavendra Swami passed away in Brindhavana at Mantralaya.
