Ranganatha was the Kuladevata (tutelary deity) of Rama’s kin, the Ikshvaku dynasty, according to the Ramayana and other ancient writings. Gopanna thus desired that all the customs and rules of the Ranganatha-dedicated Srirangam temple be followed by this temple. He also invited five Srirangam households who were familiar with Pancharatra Agama customs to Bhadrachalam for the same purpose.

They assisted in implementing the kind of worship used at the Srirangam temple. Later, Narasimha Dasu established the Dasavidhotsavams (ten types of rituals), which included the Punarvasu Utsavam, the Vaarotsavams, the Pakshotsavams, and the Nitya Kainkaryams (daily rituals) (rituals on the Punarvasu day).

Vaikunta Ekadashi:

The Vaikuntha Ekadashi festivities are modeled by the customs practiced at Srirangam. According to the Brahma Purana’s Bhadradri Kshetra Mahatyam (Bhadradri’s Significance), on the yearly festival day of Vaikuntha Ekadashi, worshippers who seek Vaikuntha Rama’s blessings would be awarded liberation.

According to the Agama literature Paramapurusha Samhita, in order to grant their request of attaining salvation, worshippers must witness Vishnu seated on the procession chariot of Garuda as it leaves the North gate.

In a lead-up to Vaikuntha Ekadashi, Teppotsavam (the float festival) is observed, during which the Utsava symbols are paraded down the Godavari River on a boat with the shape of a swan called Hamsavahanam. Teppotsavam is celebrated at night with fireworks and electric illumination.

Around 26 people follow the icons in the procession as the boat makes five circles in the water. On the day of Vaikuntha Ekadashi, worshippers travel through the Vaikuntha Dwaram while the Utsava idols of Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana are sitting atop Garudavahanam. The other two major events of the 21-day festivities are Goda Kalyanam and Rathotsavam (the chariot festival), the latter of which falls on Makar Sankranti.

Vasanthotsavam:

The spring festival of Vasanthotsavam is observed to signal the start of the yearly Brahmotsavam (Great Celebration) festival. This celebration takes place around the same time as Holi and involves making the Mutyala Talambralu (made of pearls and rice).

Rice grains with turmeric powder and the husks scraped off with nails are combined with natural pearls. Hand labor is used to process the entire mixture. Goti Talambralu is the name for this concoction after fragrant spices have been added (Talambralu polished by nails).
