Attukal Bhagavathy Temple History And Significance

The Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is steeped in a rich history and a number of legends.

It is said that a few centuries ago the leader of the Mulluveettil family was a man named Mulluveettil. Karanavar was the name given to the head. One day, as he was saying his prayers, a little girl suddenly came before him. She made the request that he assist her in navigating the Killi River.

Karanavar was convinced that the girl is exquisite due to her magnetic personality and stunning appearance. He bowed deeply in front of the young lady before assisting her across the river. Additionally, he encouraged her to visit him at his house. During the time that the family was occupied with making preparations to see the girl, she vanished.

That same evening, Karanavar had a dream in which she appeared to him. She gave him the instruction to construct her shrine in the Kavu region. It is a protected area for both the flora and the fauna that lives there. The temple was constructed in accordance with the specifications. The name “Attukal Bhagavathy Temple” was eventually bestowed upon this structure.

In addition to this, it is thought that the little girl is Kannagi. She is a manifestation of the goddess Parvati in this world. The well-known Tamil epic Chipathikaram makes reference to Kannagi at one point. She is the vanquisher of everything that is wicked. She had almost finished her trip to Madurai when she bumped across Karanavar. At that location, she had vanquished the evil, and she was now traveling to Kodungallor.
