What is the history of the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple?
During the great Pralaya, which is also known as the flood, Lord Brahma selected this city to deposit a pot of “Amrita,” which is also known as the elixir and celestial nectar. He did this so that the core of Creation may be reborn from there after the flood. In the very beginning, it was Lord Shiva who chose the hill of Meru as the location for his temple.
When Shiva came in the form of the hunter, he used an arrow to pierce the pot, which allowed the nectar to run out of the pot and into all of the nostrils on both sides. This was done so that Shiva could take on the role of the hunter. The contents of the pot overflowed and fell to the ground in different locations; these are the spots where the Shiva Lingas will finally materialize.
This is the temple where the miracle known as “Thiruvilayadal” occurred, in which God aided people on earth by descending to their level and supporting them. The name of this miracle is “Thiruvilayadal.” As a result of this, the Shaiva religious tradition regards this temple as the origin of the human race.
