The Sharadamba Temple is located in Sringeri, which is known in Sanskrit as Shringa Giri. Sri Adi Shankaracharya established the temple in the eighth century. Before the Vijayanagara monarchs and Sri Vidyaranya, the 12th Jagadguru, built a sitting gold statue of Sri Shardamba in the 14th century, it held a sandalwood figure of Shardamba in a standing stance. It is thought that Sankara had the vision of this location being the holiest and envisioned a snake using its hood as an umbrella to shield a pregnant frog from the heat of the sun as it was giving birth. On the path leading down to the river Tunga is a sculpture that has been erected as a memorial to this event and is known as KAPPE SHANKARA.

It is thought that Sankara was the one who initially founded one of the four great mutts and that he did so in this location. According to Hindu mythology, the location is connected to the wise man Rishyasringa, who was Vibhandakamuni’s son. Because of the terrible penance he performed here, this location came to be known as Sringeri.

The temple underwent restoration work during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire, which lasted from the 14th to the 16th century, and again in 1916.

Parents of children aged two to five years old are presented with a slate and chalk, or alternately, a plate of rice, on which they are instructed to pray to Goddess Saraswati and the Guru for the ability to instill a love of learning and education in their offspring.
